Syphilis Test

STD Testing Centers of America tests for syphilis using the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) Test. This test detects the antibodies that the body produces to fight syphilis. For those individuals getting a positive result another test is given as a follow-up. This is the Treponemal Pallidum Assay (TPA) which is needed to make sure the bacterium is really present. Being tested for syphilis is important as people have the infection and have no idea, thus spread it to their partners.

In order to be tested for syphilis is a blood or urine sample used?

A small amount of blood is drawn for testing by our lab technician in our testing center.

What preparations do I need to make to be ready for the test?

Fasting is not required and nothing else in particular is needed to prepare for the test.

When is the best time to be tested for syphilis?

The best time frame for taking this test for syphilis is from 3 to 6 weeks after possible exposure. If the test results are positive it is recommended that the patient be tested again 3 months after treatment has ended, just to make sure it’s completely out of the bloodstream.

When I get the results back what will they say?

The test result will come back either positive, reactive or if it’s negative, non-reactive. If the result is negative then no traces of syphilis were detected in your system. If the result comes back positive then you may have syphilis, but unless a TPA confirmation test is done it won’t be confirmed. The TPA test is able to differentiate syphilis from other possible medical conditions.

What is the cure or treatment for syphilis?

Yes, syphilis is definitely curable and the treatment is a course of antibiotics. If your test results are positive we have a physician on hand available to speak to you by phone about the results at no additional cost to you.

Who should be tested for syphilis?

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk for syphilis. This infection is very contagious yet secretive. It can lie dormant in your body for many years and because no symptoms are present you would never know it. The best way to find out if you have syphilis is to be tested. This should be a routine part of any STD screening ritual. Those having unprotected sex are always at higher risk as well as those unable to verify their partner’s status.
